William DeVon - Naw Baby
I always forgot how timeless Blackstreet is! Thankfully Washington DC’s William DeVon dropped this smooth as hell track to help me remember, and just in time for the weekend!

Ni**as in Paris: A Videojacking

The official video for the Kanye West/Jay-Z WTT anthem hasn’t dropped yet, yet a Paris based graffiti crew performed a “videojacking” 24 hours before the official drop. They definitely  did some damage to the subway!

Polica sure seems like a group to keep your eye on. This local Minneapolis band has been making some noise on the music scene, and all ears are to the ground for their February 14th LP release, Give You The Ghost. Check out the above video and then head over here to see their current tour schedule. I recommend you check them out if they are making a stop by you.

Here’s a video shot and edited by O&A for A Heart Is A Spade. Shot at Cameo in Brooklyn, watch what the band had to say about their new album, some suggested listening and their thoughts on Lana Del Rey.

Here’s a new video from the Hipster Orchestra. This awesome group of musicians is the brainchild of the Jingle Punks, a collection of creative talent who write, play and deliver licensed music for commercials, TV and film.

2011 Album Picks - Introducing Alex Ellis! Version

O&A is very excited to announce our new staff contributor, Alex Ellis! We’re really looking forward to Alex’s contributions to the site in 2012. Below is her first post which is a review of her top 2011 Albums:

“2011 has been a great year for me musically, I’ve been turned on to so many different artists and styles of music throughout the year.  Most of my new found interests have admittedly been through writing album reviews for music publications, but that’s the beauty of being a contributor - there is always something exciting that you haven’t heard yet, just around the corner.” -Alex

Cults
Cults
Released: June 7, 2011

Cults are an exciting two-piece from NYC that are tipped to take the industry by storm in 2012.  The duo saw immediate hype and high demand after anonymously uploading 3 tracks onto Bandcamp, and were quickly signed to a worldwide record deal with In The Name Of/Columbia Records - a rarity in the record industry nowadays.  ”Go Outside”, their leading single was the soundtrack to my summer.  Sweet glockenspiel and 60’s organ perfectly accompanied the heat and good vibes of 2011.

Dawes
Nothing is Wrong
Released: September 29, 2011

My next top 3 picks are all under the same label and were discovered through writing reviews for each album.  I have listened to these albums endlessly, and they are all heavily influenced by Americana which has fast become my favored genre of the year.  Dawes have got to be one of my favorite bands, not only of the year.  Since discovering them whilst writing a review for this album, I have become a Dawes fan girl.  Nothing Is Wrong encapsulates the essence of Americana in a nutshell with track favorites such as “If I wanted Someone” and “Times Spent In Los Angeles”.

Hurray For The Riff Raff
Hurray For The Riff Raff
Released: March 21, 2011

Here are the band that turned me onto Americana in a big way.  Having being quite naive towards the genre, Hooray For The Riff Raff changed the way I saw Americana.  Their self-titled album broke by heart and mended it twice over.  A teenage runaway, front-woman Lee Segarra collects her life encounters and experiences and pours her soul into her lyrics and melodies.  The album is ultimately dedicated to the street musicians of New Orleans that Segarra has encountered on her journeys.

The Felice Brothers
Celebration, Florida
Released: April 26, 2011

The Felice Brothers are like nothing I’ve ever heard before.  Their ability to mix a concoction of such unlikely genres together is incredible; fusing folk with experimental hip hop in the track “fire at the pageant” showcases the Felice Brothers’ quirky style.  The Felice Brothers take Americana and completely distort, amplify and re-shape it as we know it, giving the genre a 21st century twist with synths, electronic drum grooves and samples.  The band are causing quite a stir in the music scene and I predict a lot of success for them in 2012.

Incubus
If Not Now, When?
Released: July 12, 2011

Having been an Incubus fan for almost 12 years, it’s very rare that I won’t buy a new album immediately upon release and listen to it exhaustively.  Hence why Incubus unquestionably take the crown for my top album of 2011.  Though If Not Now, When? strays from the bands signature style of alternative metal, the album tends to the recent style the band have used in their previous release of Light Grenades.  Highlights include “Adolescents” and “Isadore”.
